A Community Quilt Project: My Hope for America

When

12:00 am

As our country approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, rePlay is participating in Becoming America, a national art project from Women Building Peace. We will join artists and makers from across the nation in sharing their hopes for America’s future by creating a community quilt. We invite YOU to add your voice by making one square – no sewing experience needed – in response to a simple, open-ended prompt:

My hope for America is…

Your quilt square might reflect what you hope our nation can become, what you feel called to protect, or what you believe we can build together.

This is a project for all of us — non-partisan, open-hearted, and rooted in hope. Whether you’re a lifelong fiber artist or someone who’s never made a quilt before, your voice belongs here. Feel free to use any material or art technique – drawing, painting, embroidery, quilting, beading, or whatever your heart desires –  as long as it will hold up on a piece of fabric.

Pick up a free kit at rePlay Arts. Inside you’ll find a cotton square, a planning template, and full instructions. Take it home (or work on it at rePlay!), make it yours, and return your completed square to us by July 15th.

Kits are available at rePlay starting Tuesday 5/26 during open hours: Tuesdays 11-6, Wednesdays 11-6, and Saturdays 10-4

A few guidelines to keep in mind:

    • All content should be positive, uplifting, and appropriate for all audiences.
    • Consistent with the project’s cross-partisan values, we will not accept submissions that use disparaging or dehumanizing language or are overly partisan.
    • Please use materials durable enough to survive quilting, packaging, and mailing.
    • We may make material alterations to some submissions so that every square will shine and play well with its neighbors! Content will not be changed.
    • We reserve the right to exclude squares that fall outside these guidelines or that may cause damage to surrounding squares.

We can’t wait to turn the hopes and dreams of our community into a work of art!
